Although I took a seminar course last year on the Kennedy family and take this day very seriously, today we also remember another Kennedy whose great personality we lost on August 8, 1997…from MTV that is. It was the start of MTV becoming less music related and more focused on reality shows (and sadly sort a joke). Of course, the original idea to honor this Kennedy came from Maxim, who released an article today in remembrance of Kennedy’s own Camelot at MTV. Check out that article here. Just to make it clear, this Kennedy is still alive and vividly kicking!
I admit, I was just turning 3 at the time, but Lisa Kennedy Montgomery means a lot to me. She left MTV that day, but she went on to host one of my favorite game shows Friend Or Foe.I also saw her on VH1’s Best Week Ever, the Who Wants To Be The Governor of California debate, caught up on Alternative Nation and her MTV days, read her great bookThe Kennedy Chronicles, and now follow her amazing antics on Reason and ALT 98.7 Radio. Yes, I am a super fan. We love Kennedy here, and just felt the need to make it clear in response to this hilarious article. But seriously, we’ve spent 50 years in remembrance of the President’s unfortunate death and continue to honor his legacy. You’ll be hearing that coverage all day, so for a few minutes why not cheer up a little, enjoy an alternative headline, and celebrate an amazing music-media personality—and hope for 50 more years of her humor and legacy. Follow Kennedy on twitter: @KennedyNation This week’s mix starts with a classic. It’s a cold day and Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams is the perfect song for the occasion: Who are those hilarious shadows dancing in this very indie video, you may ask? It’s the amazing The Royal Concept, who have seemingly emerged overnight to become quite the sensation. Last week we went on a musical journey with the three sisters of HAIM, so naturally this week we decided the journey should be with an equally amazing group of three brothers: The Ceremonies. When a Spotify ‘related artists’ list notes bands such as American Authors, Little Green Cars, Pacific Air, St. Lucia, and Parade of Lights, then you know you’ve found an indie goldmine.
Heavenly Addicting Indie Music. That’s not what HAIM stands for, but it definitely should. The sister trio from the San Fernando Valley are no valley girls, but rather Rock Goddesses. Don’t take my word for it, just look at all the hype they’re getting with the media. Articles for Fader, SPIN, LA Weekly, and this week’s issue of Rolling Stone, all about the girls and their amazing debut album Days Are Gone.Is there anything left to say about the group? Probably not, but that’s not a reason why we shouldn’t take a multimedia trip, exploring their music and personalities even deeper. They’re charming and talented—no question an Indie List Maker.

Every week we feature a notable rising artist on the verge of success. This week we thought about the power of covering music. We’re focusing on a group who I’ve discovered through searching for good covers and have impressed me with their sound and original songs. Do you remember the exact moment when you heard a hit for the very first time? I wish I could remember the first time I heard of Rooney or Phantom Planet or even No Doubt, and experience that great feeling of discovery again. Fortunately, I do remember the first time I heard of NONONO. Good music happens to come to me on my birthday. 3 years ago I saw an intimate set from the The Steelwells. Last year I saw Walk The Moon for the very first time. This year while I was making my way to LA, I heard Pumpin Blood for the very first time.
All you have to do is hear it once, and you’ll be whistling it for the next month. Those raspy, whispering vocals are just so spectacular too. The sound is just so irresistible, it just makes you want more. Luckily, there is more that’s just as infectious. When you have artists such as Passion Pit, John Mayer, and Walk The Moon on your client list, you know you have a great ear and an equally great management company. The Brooklyn-based Mick Management is the business behind a lot of our favorite artists. I would LOVE to intern for them if I lived in New York and had the chance to, because that would be really awesome—especially if I got to meet many rising acts and my favorite bands (yes, this is me shamelessly trying to build a relationship with the best indie/alt management team).
Founded in 2001 by Michael McDonald (not the singer, but the former Dave Matthews tour manager and ATO Records co-founder), they describe themselves as a “boutique artist management company,” and for good reason, since they specialize in a small amount of high quality acts: Ray LaMontagne, Deer Tick, Lord Huron, and Toyko Police Club just to name a few more. Two of their groups recently released new albums that have been making a lot of buzz in the indie community. Both St. Lucia and White Denim have great new music out that lives up to the Mick Management reputation.
Unlike many other genres and music communities, the indie/alt culture appreciates new and rising artists that create diversity and new insights within the genre. The focus and obsession is more on the music and the characteristics of the artist, rather than the fame and personality that mainstream dwells on. The beauty of rising acts in this community is the intimacy and connection the artist builds with the fan base: indie fans love discovering new music and going on a journey with bands, from the very start to the well deserved popularity stage.
Yes, there are many established alternative bands that fans adore, but indie listeners just love something about the discovering of a fresh act and the building of a career before their eyes. I love Arcade Fire, The Arctic Monkeys, and The Black Keys, but there’s something much more interesting and powerful about seeing the beginnings of NONONO, San Cisco, Terraplane Sun, Hunter Hunted, The Steelwells, and White Denim. Creating the connection for yourself at such an intimate level, before anyone else has the chance to indulge in their genius, is simply fantastic: the band essentially becomes yours. That is my favorite part of indie culture. That being said, we feel like it is important to note great rising acts here. Today we’re focusing on three of my favorite bands that I’ve casually discovered on various social media platforms, which allows for an even closer connection between fans and the groups. |
