Vancouver power pop band The Sylvia Platters have just released a new single entitled Reelin’ In The Years. The four piece group composed of Nick and Tim Ubels, Simon Tressel, and familiar face Jeffery Trainor of Western Jaguar, crank out a short but energy packed surf-rock track. With fervently flowing guitar and bass lines evoking crashing coastal waves, the song is reminiscent of that of FIDLAR meets Blink-182. What makes this track so epically their own is an unexpected vibrant sax hook, played by Matt Tressel, which just blends right into their edgy punkish sound dynamic. It’s the perfect soundtrack to your Summer-anticipatory Friday.

Alternative Rising Act Jay Woodward has released a new music video for his hit song Howl off his 2013 debut album Letters We Told. Back when we first met Woodward, we described his music as having "the soul of an American troubadour" with " very catchy and intriguing [melodic lines] due to the atmospheric and experimental elements that are a departure from standard folk melodies." You can feel that troubadour soul and sense the atmospheric elements in this nature-driven video shot in the forestry of the Big Bear, California by Leslie Chou. The lyric "the animal inside this wild beast needs to roam" is existentially transfigured into this amazing spectacle.
This video just showcases the incredible artist-driven vision and innovative indie-minded passion that the Woodward team prides themselves in developing. The midcentury inspired folk aesthetic with a psychedelic turn is very indicative of both the Ginsberg poem of the same name which inspired this track, and of The Woodwards' own American essence embodied in the Wood Leather collection curated and ran by Miss HD Woodward. In his Footnote To Howl Ginsberg writes "the voice is holy the hearers are holy...Holy the supernatural extra brilliant intelligent kindness of the soul!" That artisanal holiness extends to the Wood Leather mission statement: "The environment in which something is created can either stimulate the creation or kill it." Both are representative of The Woodwards' devotion to genuine artistry and expression, and how every aspect is hand-crafted in a supportive and inventive environment to produce the best quality products that are intelligent, kind, and full of thoughtful soul. This video is just one of many examples. Holy are The Woodward's for all that they create. Thankfully we should be hearing more of Jay Woodward's incredible music soon. The artist is currently working on new material for his Second Record. We cannot wait to hear it. For now, stay up to date with all things Woodward on his Twitter, Facebook page, and Main Site. Like what you hear, buy his material over on his Bandcamp.
Alternative Rising Act Wonderful Humans are back with a new single off their upcoming debut EP, out in June. Don't You is definitely a darker, funkier, and more sultry track from the New York electropop duo, reminiscent of deep cuts from MS MR's Secondhand Rapture. With driving synth undertones, the classic WH alluring vocals, and an infectious electrosax hook, you can feel the anxious passion, an edge of effervescent emotion. Included is a sort of meta lyric, "I'm ready for the next level now" and it's evident that with this song Wonderful Humans are rapidly rising and all set for that next level of success. In response to "don't you want me," everyone will soon be singing the praises to this incredible group, begging for more music from the wonderful artistry that is Amanda Carl and Brian Cag.
You can now stream or buy Don't You on your favorite platform. Go give the track some love on Hypem and help Wonderful Humans rise on the Popular Chart.
Alternative favorites New Politics have just released a new single off their upcoming third studio album Vikings, out August 14th on DCD2 Records. The group says about their alt-anthem West End Kids: "The song is about Vesterport (West End), the area in Copenhagen where we once lived. It’s where we played some of our first shows, where we first fell in love, and first felt heartbreak. It’s also where we had to say goodbye in order to make the sacrifices needed to move to Brooklyn and live out our dream of playing music. So here it is hope you like West End Kids!" You'll be able to buy and stream the track on your favorite platform tomorrow. For now, sit back and enjoy some great new alt music to start your week off right.

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, alternative favorites Portugal. The Man have shared a cover of their hit song Purple Yellow Red And Blue. This version, done by the Mexican-American indie group The Chamanas, is a Huastecan re-imagining with Spanish lyrics and a traditional Mexican-folk music flare. With atmospheric elements and addicting vocals, this cover will fore sure make you wanna live in ecstasy.
Nashville based artist Zeke Duhon has just released a new video for his single Always Is Now. The singer-songwriter recently played SXSW and has signed a publishing deal with Big Deal Music, whose roster includes Bad Suns, Sylvan Esso, Ray LaMontagne, St. Vincent, and Sleater-Kinney just to name a few. The alt-folk track is a longing atmospheric rumination with an addictingly cerebral rhythmic texture reminiscent of alt-J. Duhon's bio says it best: "It is easy to be carried away by his sweeping melodies, enchanted by the timbre of his voice and impressed by the architecture of his songs. His repertoire is a crackling hearth fire. In a time of chill, he’s here only to bring warmth." That imagery is perfectly captured in his beautifully cinematic video. This certainly won't be the last you'll be hearing of Zeke Duhon, but since "all we have is now, always is now" take a moment to cherish the talent in his latest release.
